Vigabatrin is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat refractory complex partial seizures and infantile spasms. It belongs to the class of GABA analogs and works by irreversibly inhibiting the enzyme GABA transaminase, which breaks down GABA, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This leads to increased GABA concentrations, reducing neuronal excitability and thus suppressing seizures.
