Brand: Velban, Alblastine, Vinblastine Richter, Vinblastine Teva
Vinblastine is a vinca alkaloid antineoplastic agent used to treat various types of cancer. It works by interfering with cell division, specifically by inhibiting microtubule polymerization, which disrupts the formation of the mitotic spindle and prevents the separation of chromosomes during cell division. This leads to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis (programmed cell death) of rapidly dividing cancer cells. Vinblastine is typically administered intravenously and is often used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs.
Used to treat Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, testicular cancer, breast cancer, choriocarcinoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, and histiocytosis.
Extravasation of vinblastine can cause severe local tissue necrosis. Proper intravenous administration is crucial. Vinblastine is also a potent myelosuppressant and can cause life-threatening bone marrow suppression.
