Zoledronic acid is a bisphosphonate, a class of drugs that prevent the loss of bone density. It's primarily used to treat osteoporosis and other conditions that weaken bones, including Paget's disease of bone, hypercalcemia of malignancy, and multiple myeloma. Zoledronic acid works by slowing down the action of osteoclasts, cells that break down bone tissue, which helps to maintain bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures.
For treatment of osteoporosis, Paget's disease of bone, hypercalcemia of malignancy, and multiple myeloma.
May cause severe and occasionally incapacitating bone, joint, and/or muscle pain; atypical femur fractures; and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).
