Zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic of the imidazopyridine class. It is a sedative-hypnotic medication used for the short-term treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulties with sleep initiation. Zolpidem acts by binding to the benzodiazepine receptor subtype omega-1 receptor, which is the same receptor subtype that the benzodiazepine drugs bind to, thereby producing sedative and hypnotic effects.
