Zonisamide is an antiepileptic drug, also known as an anticonvulsant, used to treat partial seizures in adults with epilepsy. It belongs to the sulfonamide class of medications but does not have antibiotic properties. Zonisamide works by blocking sodium and calcium channels in the brain, reducing the abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures. It may also enhance the inhibitory effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter that calms brain activity.
For adjunctive treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy.
Zonisamide carries a black box warning for the risk of serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, as well as the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior.
