Zopiclone is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It belongs to the cyclopyrrolone class and acts as a modulator at the benzodiazepine receptor site on the GABA-A receptor complex, promoting sleep by enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA in the central nervous system. It is generally prescribed for a duration of 7-10 days due to the risk of dependence and withdrawal symptoms with prolonged use.
